Gerald Hoppe Obituary

Gerald David Hoppe, age 81, of Green Bay, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Sunday, April 1, 2018.  He was born on August 5, 1936, in Kansas City, MO, the son of the late Erich and Adah (Lohafer) Hoppe.  David grew up in DeKalb, Illinois, and graduated from DeKalb Township High School in 1954, and from UW-Madison in 1959.  On August 29, 1959, he married Nannette Benter at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Pulcifer, Wisconsin.

David was a successful New York Life Insurance Agent for more than 50 years and achieved the CLU (Chartered Life Underwriter) and ChFC (Chartered Financial Consultant) designations along with production awards through the years.

David loved football, having played during his high school years, and was an avid UW-Badger fan and supporter.  He enjoyed reading, especially about history, mainly World War II, and about basketball and football.  He was a long-time member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Green Bay.  He served on the church council, as an usher in his early years of membership, and was a supporter of Pilgrim Lutheran School and NEW Lutheran High School.

He enjoyed traveling with the family for many years throughout the United States and parts of Europe.  Especially memorable were ranch vacations including horseback riding in Western States in the Rocky Mountains from Canada to Mexico.  He was fond of the family dogs, most recently, Krystal, from Happily Ever After, and was a supporter of the Green Bay and Oconto Humane Societies as well as Happily Ever After.  He enjoyed many relaxing hours hiking in the Machickanee Forest and at the adjacent family log house.

David was known for his quick wit and good humor for which he will surely be missed.

David is survived by his loving wife, Nannette; son and daughter-in-law, Erich (Danielle Long) Hoppe, of Santa Cruz, CA; daughter, Lousene (Alicia) Schwarz, of Minneapolis, MN; granddaughter, Isabella Hoppe; and sister, Caroline (George) Keller, of Santa Rosa, CA.
