Jack Byler Obituary

Jack Byler, 89, Green Bay, passed away on Friday, April 20, 2018. He was born on October 28, 1928 to the late Leland and Iva (Tubbs) Byler in Green Bay. Jack was a graduate of West High School. On November 16, 1957, he married Shirley Altergott and was a loving husband to her for 60 years. They shared many wonderful memories together.

Jack worked at Red Owl as a produce buyer for 40 years and then worked part time at Copps Foods until his retirement.

Jack had a passion for golf and was in leagues at Mid Vallee Golf Course for 45 years. He golfed until he was 88 and always enjoyed the 19th hole with his golf buddies.

Jack loved to dance and belonged to the Whirl-A-Ways Square Dance Club and other dance clubs throughout his life. Jack and Shirley could jitterbug like no one else! Jack was an avid Packer fan and attended games and tailgate parties well into his 80’s.

Jack and Shirley enjoyed traveling with friends to many places around the world. Some of their best memories were made at Rasmussen Cottages on Summit Lake. They started a tradition that began 56 years ago, includes three generations and continues on to this day.

Jack was an active member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. He instilled family values and cherished relationships with family and friends above all else. He loved a good happy hour and having heart to heart conversations while drinking an old fashioned. Jack had a close relationship with his daughters and son-in-laws (we couldn’t have asked for a better dad!). He made a deep imprint on his grandchildrens’ lives and was at all of their events cheering them on. Jack will be dearly missed by his loving family and many friends.

Jack is survived by his wife of 60 years, Shirley; daughters, Lynn (Mark) Berndt and Amy (Gary) Sanders; grandchildren, Jack and Josie Berndt, Olivia, Austin, Emma, Grant and Neil Sanders; sister-in-law, Mary Ann (Don) Reimer; brother-in-law, Bob Altergott; sister-in-law, Judy Altergott; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his step father, Joe VanLangendon; special aunt, Bernice Jorgensen; father and mother-in-law, Henry and Charlotte Altergott; brother-in-law, Chuck (Delores) Altergott; many other aunts, uncles and friends.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 25, 2018, at Lyndahl Funeral Home, 1350 Lombardi Avenue, from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue on Thursday, April 26, 2018 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 341 Wilson Avenue, from 10:00 am until the time of funeral service at 11:00 am with Rev. Diane Rew officiating.

The family would like to thank the wonderful support of Home Instead Senior Care, especially Jean, Margo and Berta, along with his dear Chantel Street neighbors and Unity Hospice for blessing Jack with the ability to stay in his home until the end of his life.
