Betty (Bernard) Giesen, 89 years old, passed away on Sunday, October 23, 2022, at Bellin Hospital in Green Bay, WI. Betty was born September 1, 1933, in Norway, MI to the late Katherine and Joseph Bernard of Niagara, WI. She was preceded in death by her husband Aloysius Giesen, her sister Dorothy Bal, and brother Robert Bernard.
Betty graduated in 1955 from the University of Wisconsin with a BS in Home Economics and in 1963 with a Master of Education from the University of Maryland.
Betty was first employed as a county home extension agent in Taylor County, WI, Gladwin and Monroe, MI, and Hagerstown, MD from 1955 until 1965.
She taught Home Economics in Milwaukee, WI and Dickinson, Iron County, MI from 1965 until 1983. After being a stay-at-home mom, she returned to the workforce in 1994, and worked as a clerical specialist for the Brown County Health Department.
Throughout her life, Betty enjoyed music, crafting, gardening, flowers, and sewing. Up to the end of her days, she crocheted and created some amazing afghans. Betty had a sweet tooth and always appreciated good fudge and chocolate. Taking trips to see Lake Superior, Michigan, and Door County, mom always loved the peacefulness of being by the water. Cheering on the Packers and enjoying a good Kroll’s hamburger were simple pleasures in mom’s life.
Betty touched many people through her school, work, and life experiences. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered for her laughter and gentle spirit.
Betty is survived by her son Joseph Giesen, daughter-in-law Gina (Pataconi) Giesen, many nieces and nephews, and extended family.
The Giesen/Pataconi family would like to extend gratitude to the staff at Bellin and Marla Vista for caring for our mom during her final days.
Visitation for the public will be on Saturday, October 29 from 9:30 am until 11:00 am at Nativity of Our Lord Parish, 2270 S. Oneida St., Green Bay, WI. The Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 am with Rev. Matt Simonar officiating. Betty will be laid to rest at Allouez Catholic Cemetery following services.
