Carole Nelson Obituary

Carole W. Nelson, age 82, passed away Friday, December 17, 2021. Carole was born May 22, 1939, in Beatrice, Missouri to the late John and Agnes Aspedon. On April 2nd,1972 Carole married David Nelson in the Argonia United Methodist Church in Argonia, Kansas.  Carole and David were less than five months away from celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.

Carole earned her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Southwestern College, Winfield, Kansas. She was only her thesis short of receiving her Master’s degree in Education from the University of Kansas.  From her childhood, she yearned to travel. She taught in public schools in California and Virginia. She had a two-year contract with the Department of State to teach English to native children on the island of Truk in Micronesia. Carole taught in Department of Defense (DoD) elementary schools in the Philippines and in Germany. Carole, like most young teachers based overseas, took maximum advantage of her location, visiting dozens of countries during vacation periods.

She lived a lifelong adventure by traveling and teaching, meeting her future husband David while teaching at a DoD school in Kaiserslautern, Germany.  Carole collected dolls and souvenirs from her travels that she loved to show off and display.  She finally settled in Green Bay, WI, and took time off to lovingly raise her two sons.  Carole then returned to teaching as a substitute teacher in Green Bay.

Carole had two more great loves in her life: her crafts and her church.  She was very gifted at sewing, crocheting, and knitting.  Anyone who met her has a quilt, stuffed animal, Christmas stocking, or any of the numerous creations she loved to make and give away.  She passionately attended Sunday church services and loved going to quilting at Calvary Lutheran Church every Wednesday.  She made hundreds of quilts in her lifetime to give away to friends, family, and those in need.  Carole was a truly talented and generous person, and she will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her husband:  David; two children: Andrew (Amy) Nelson and Paul (Karen) Nelson; three grandchildren: Graham, John, and Samantha; brother: Gene Aspedon; sisters-in-law: Anita Aspedon, Marge Nelson and Carolyn (Ron) Revak; aunt: Marjorie Stevens (who turns 100 this month.)  Carole is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Carole was preceded in death by her parents; Sisters: Margie Aspedon, Sandy Ritchey, and Evelyn Freeman; Brothers: Paul Aspedon and Russell (Peg) Aspedon; sister-in-law: Martha Aspedon.

Relatives and friends may greet the family between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. on Monday, January 3, 2021, at Calvary Lutheran Church, 1301 S. Ridge Road, Green Bay.  The funeral service will follow at 12:00 noon with Pastor Jeff Fricke officiating. Cremation has taken place with burial to follow at a later date at Riverside Cemetery in Ladysmith, Wisconsin.
