Dr. Donald L. Sherwood, M.D., age 89, passed away on March 30, 2023, in Kalamazoo, MI. Don is survived by his wife, Geraldine, son and daughter-in-law, Eric and Sandra, son Lance and six grandchildren, Alicia, Matthew, Nicole, Lauren, Daniel and Andrew. Don was born on November 28, 1933, in Gays Mills, WI to Luke and Evelyn Sherwood. He grew up in a loving home with his sister, the late Elinor Ann Keen and brother, David Stanley. Don went on to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he played trumpet in the Badger marching band in the 1953 Rose Bowl, earned a medical degree in 1958 and met his wife, Geraldine Marie Lewnau. Don and Geraldine were married on June 21, 1958. After his internship in Portland, OR from 1958 to 1959, Don completed his residency in Chicago, IL in 1960. Later that year, he enlisted in the US Army as a Captain in the Medical Corp. Stationed in Frankfurt, Germany from 1961 -1962, Don served at the 97th General Medical Army Hospital. Honorably discharged from the US Army in 1963, Don and his wife Geraldine settled in Green Bay, WI to start his medical practice and raise their two sons, Eric, and Lance. Initially starting his practice with one partner, then becoming a full-time emergency room doctor, Don later joined the West Side Clinic for the remainder of his 30-year medical career. All his life Don had a love of family, friends, music, sports, and the outdoors. An avid fisherman, he enjoyed fishing the harbors of Door County as well as Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River. Don enjoyed playing tennis, golf, and skiing with his family, friends, and local business leaders. While living in Green Bay, Don was active in the First United Methodist Church, the YMCA, the Western Racquet Club, The American Medical Association and The Sons of Norway, among other local organizations. Don and Geraldine lived in Green Bay for 56 years before moving to Kalamazoo, MI in 2021 to reside at The Fountains at Bronson Place, a retirement community. Prior to moving to Michigan, Don was the caregiver for Geraldine, his wife of 64 years. A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held at the First United Methodist Church 501 Howe Street, Green Bay, WI on May 6, 2023, at 11:00am.
