Doreen Roarty Obituary

Doreen Roarty, age 90, of Howard, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at New Perspectives Senior Living. Doreen was born on April 4, 1933, in Virginia, Minnesota to Leroy Comeau and Doris Peckels. She met the love of her life, James Roarty, in Milwaukee, in 1949 and on August 25, 1951, they were married at St. Rose of Lima Church in Milwaukee. Doreen and Jim spent 66 years together until Jim passed away in 2017.

Doreen, affectionately known as “Mother Superior” to her sisters, was a daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, and great grandmother. She loved family time, whether it be camping with the NCHA, family reunions with her sisters’ families, Thanksgiving meals or Christmas gift exchanges. We could always count on a plethora of cookies, brownies, fudge, divinity, and other treats.

Family life in Virginia was challenging but she had numerous cousins, aunts, and uncles with whom to spend time. In 1948 the family relocated from the iron mining region in Virginia, Minnesota to Milwaukee. She graduated from West Division High School in Milwaukee, finishing third in her class and received a scholarship offer from the Wisconsin Teacher’s College.

Instead of college, she married at the young age of eighteen and began a career working within the emerging computer technology world. Her early career included Hosiery Distributors, Wagner Electric and A. O. Smith (Milwaukee) and in Green Bay, Green Bay Food Co (Larsen Canning), IBM, H. C. Prange, St. Norbert College and UWGB. Each of her jobs included some aspect of computer data entry or, in her later career, learning and using microcomputer technology. In 1995, Doreen was honored with the UWGB Founders Association Award for Excellence.

She was an accomplished seamstress, making her wedding dress, her sons’ christening robes and numerous dresses, shirts, and jackets for the family. Doreen was also the Family CEO, keeping the household running smoothly and making sure Jim and the boys were well cared for.

Doreen is survived by her sons (and their wives): Dan (Kathy), Mike (Cheryl) and Tim (Holly); sisters: Harriette Niemi and Laura Lee (Curt) Gullickson; grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband: James; parents: Leroy Comeau and Doris Peckels Comeau Pickruhn; brother-in-law: Eino Niemi; and granddaughter: Lauren Delaney Roarty.
