Douglas “Doug” James Staidl, 85, of Green Bay passed away peacefully on Thanksgiving evening, November 23, 2023, following a short illness at Eden Vista Nursing Home.
The son of the late Emil and Lina Mae (Macfarlene) Staidl, Doug was born on September 11, 1938, in Oconto. He graduated from Oconto High School where he enjoyed playing football on the High school Football Team. On June 23, 1967, he married Iola “Lois” McAllan who preceded him in death on May 19, 1993.
In his earlier years, Doug was a crew member aboard ships that sailed the Great Lakes. He was later hired by the National Can in Green Bay, and it was from there that he retired. He made lifetime friends in both venues.
Doug was a lover of the outdoors, and his earlier years reflected his passion. Camping, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, swimming, and making homemade maple syrup were just a few of the activities that would occupy his free time. In addition, he enjoyed playing card games, smoking a good cigar and visiting with friends and family. As the hunting and fishing subsided, Doug discovered the joy of traveling. A lifelong Packer fan, Doug shared the joy of the unexpected Packer victory over the Lions on his final day with us.
Doug is survived by his significant other: Mary Kay Basten, who has shared his life for over twenty-five years; he was a wonderful father to: Donald (Patricia) McAllen, Judy (Clarence “Butch”) Timm, Sue (Bob) Roska, Darla Libassi, Jim (Heather) Basten, Perry (Wendi) Basten, Carrie (Stephen) Smith, Kelly (Matthew) Baenen; he was adored by many grandchildren and great grandchildren who called him Grampa Pond; nieces and nephews: Einard Staidl, Cindy (Harry) Shallow, Valerie (Steve) Borkovec; and sister-in-law: Donna Staidl.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Iola “Lois” Staidl; and brother: Eugene Staidl.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday December 2, 2023, at 4:30 pm, at The Lyndahl Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 1350 Lombardi Avenue, Green Bay. Visitation will occur from 2:30 until the time of service. The burial of cremains will take place at Fort Howard Cemetery.
