In Loving Memory of Gary Johnson
Gary L. Johnson age 77, was a man of many passions and boundless warmth. It is with heavy hearts that we announce his passing on September 12, 2023, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Gary was born on August 24, 1946, in Stambaugh, Michigan to Delmar and Leona (Plourde) Johnson. He was a graduate of Prospect High School, Mt. Prospect, IL. On November 5, 1966, he married the former Kathleen Cunningham. Throughout his career, Gary wore many hats. He worked for Handleman, opened TJ's Pizza restaurant, and helped rebuild his father’s pallet mill business in Green Bay. His unique ability to connect with people along with his knack for solving problems helped him thrive in all his careers. His dedication and work ethic were second to none.
Gary enjoyed fishing hundreds of lakes throughout Canada and the Midwest, hunting with his good friends out west, watching NASCAR and fixing up cars, cheering on his Green Bay Packers, listening to good music, and bragging about his grandchildren.
His journey through life was shared with his beloved wife, Kathy, for an incredible 57 years. Their love was an enduring testament to the strength of commitment. Together, they raised two wonderful children, Kenny, and Kari.
While much of his youth was spent in Illinois, later in life, Gary and Kathy relocated to Green Bay, WI. Gary was a true people person, a friend to all he met, and a master at turning even the coldest hearts into warm friendships. His ability to connect with others was a gift that brought joy to everyone around him.
Gary's legacy lives on through his wife, Kathy, his daughter Kari, and her husband Grant, and their three cherished grandchildren, Gavin, Grady, and Raegan; his special niece Ryann Hutjens, who he thought of as a second daughter and her husband Brad. He is also survived by his two brothers, Daryl (Rita) Johnson and Randy (Wendy) Johnson; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Sharon Cunningham, Bill Cunningham, and Mala Cunningham. He was preceded in death by his son, Ken Johnson; his parents Delmar and Leona Johnson; parents-in-law, Bill, and Lorraine Cunningham; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bob Cunningham, and Diane Cunningham.
A memorial service to celebrate Gary’s life will be held on Saturday, September 16, 2023, at 3:00 pm at The Lyndahl Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 1350 Lombardi Avenue, with Pastor Brian Nelson officiating.
