George Pokorny Obituary

George J. Pokorny, Jr., age 82, died Tuesday evening, February 2, 2021. He was born on May 15, 1938 in Wauwatosa to the late George Sr. and Josephine (Kurowski) Pokorny. The family moved to Green Bay when he was a youngster and lived on the East side of Green Bay. George attended East High School. He married the former Jean Obry Lewins on December 14, 1963 and they celebrated their 40th. Wedding anniversary with family and friends. George and Jean spent their 50th. wedding anniversary in Hawaii on a 21-day visit.

George drove semi over the road for 30 years, retiring on December 31, 1999.  As he was not able to do many things he wanted to during that time, he made up for it during his retirement.  Growing up at Red Banks, he was always attracted to the water so he volunteered for the Coast Guard Auxiliary for over 15 years.  He was always happy when he was able to give someone a “pass” sticker for their boat.  He enjoyed teaching youngsters about boating safety. George also was Jean’s volunteer (his explanation) at the animal shelter, working on many fundraising events over the years.

George always had time to help out his friends.  His motto was “Let George Do It” and even had business cards made up stating this fact.  He had a snow plowing business and plowed friends and family for free.  Anyone who had a car needing repairs ended up in ‘Grandpa’s Garage”.  After selling the house in Oneida and moving to Green Bay, he missed his garage so spent

more time on the water. His best times were fishing, whether on the bay, river or various lakes. He enjoyed playing sheepshead with Jean and her family and also his sons and Jim Skenandore.  He always tried to get everyone else to deal when it was his turn.

One of his greatest joys was officiating at the wedding of his godchild, Julia Skenandore to Raman Ravindran on July 12, 2014.

George is survived by his sons, Randy (Mary) Lewins, Appleton and George Pokorny, III of Oneida; sisters and brothers, Carolyn (Ric) Hunsucker, Green Bay, Ralph (Nancy) Pokorny, Appleton, Terry Haller, Elaine Haller, Hancock, WI, Kathy (Dave) Anderson, La Crosse, Connie (Rob) Tinnes, Parker, CO, sister in-law Ruth Pokorny, and John Pokorny, De Pere; he is further survived by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Dave (Pam) Obry, Carole (Bill) Wagener, California and Cheryl (Karl) Korth, Cottage Grove, WI; George and Jean’s best friends, Jim and Kelly Skenandore and their children, Julia (Raman) and Kyle (Kenzie); nephews and nieces and many friends also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents, mother-in-law and father in-law, Harlan and Viola Obry; his brother/best friend, Dennis Haller, Dave and sister Virgina (Leonard) Coppersmith, Paul Pokorny and brother-in-law Manuel Harn.
