Gerald O. Westlund

Gerald O. Westlund, age 98, passed away April 14, 2023. He was born in Mason, Wisconsin on January 24, 1925 to the late Jacob and Ruth (Olson) Westlund.

Gerald went to Ondossagon High School for one year, then attended and graduated from Ashland High School in 1943. He was drafted and proudly served in the United States Army and WW II.   On January 11, 1974, he married Patricia A. Schmidt in DePere.

After graduating at UW Stout, he taught wood working at the Green Bay Correctional Institute and Green Bay Vocational School. Gerald was instrumental in starting the “model” building program at the Vocational School. He later moved to the NWTC campus from where he retired in 1985. Gerald was always building or remodeling houses, building furniture of all kinds and teaching others how to work in construction of wood products. While wintering in Florida, he kept busy helping with building projects at two churches.

Gerald and Patricia Westlund were faithful members of Highland Crest Baptist Church of Green Bay, WI.

Gerald was an avid deer hunter and fisherman, taking his family and friends along when they were able to go.  Gerald will be remembered as a kind, patient and patriotic man, loved by all.  He will be missed by everyone who knew him.

Gerald is survived by Sons: Tom Westlund, Terry Westlund, Todd Westlund; Daughter: Becky (Bill) Knaus, Brothers: Eugene (Elaine) Westlund, Herb (Lois) Westlund; Sister: Eunice (Gary) Newlon; Kay Westlund, Grandchildren: Brent (Jami) Westlund – Lillian and Noah Westlund; Branden (Macy) Westlund; Taylor (Brittany Bechard) Westlund – Henry Westlund; Abraham Janssen; and also survived by loving extended family: Steve (Donna) Schmidt; Paul (Cindy) Schmidt; Peggy (Mark) Tomasek; Karl (Karen) Schmidt; and Grandchildren: Karen (Tripp) Dolman, Michael Schmidt, Laura (Josh) Hoekstra, Sarah Schmidt, Andrew (Camila) Schmidt, Nicole (Jason) Pool, Kelly (Brian) Peterson, Lee (Andrea) Tomasek and Ben (Mary) Tomasek; along with many great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Patricia Westlund; his parents; Brothers: Robert Westlund; Earl Westlund; and Sisters in law; Son, Tim Westlund; and Grandchild, Matt Schmidt.

The families wish to thank the caring staff at Woodside Nursing Home for the excellent care and friendship they provided Gerald while he was there. They also want to thank Unity Hospice for the special care during the last weeks.

Pastor Chad Hertler of Highland Crest Baptist Church, Green Bay, will officiate the celebration of life for Gerald Westlund at First United Presbyterian Church, 605 N. Webster Ave., De Pere, WI  54143.  (Corner of Webster Ave. and George Street)

Visitation will be on May 13, 2023 from 10:00 AM until the time of service at 11:00 AM. Luncheon will be after the service, then burial at Woodlawn Cemetery, 1542 Webster Ave., Green Bay, WI.
