Irma Lyon Obituary

Irma Reynolds Lyon, 91, peacefully passed away on April 5th, 2021. Irma was born on April 22nd, 1929 in Reedsburg, WI to Fyrl and Ruby (Mundth) Reynolds. After schooling in Reedsburg, she attended the University of WI- Madison School of Applied Music, graduating in 1951 with high honors- she developed her beautiful contralto voice during her time there as well as mastered the piano, violin, bassoon, and pipe organ. Shortly after school Irma auditioned with Dr. Leo Sowerby, a prominent composer, music director, and organist for the Saint James Episcopal Cathedral on Rush Street in Chicago, IL. She was hired on the spot to sing as a member of a paid vocal quartet, performing at Sunday worship services and other special events. Irma also travelled to New York City and sang with the St. Norbert Dudley Birder Chorale.

Irma raised her children in Escanaba, MI where she resided for 18 years. She then relocated to Green Bay, WI. and obtained her degree as a medical assistant, graduating at the top of her class- this led to her being hired as Dr. Herbert F. Sandmire’s medical assistant at the Medical Arts Building until her retirement.

Irma had a passion for volunteer work dedicating her time to the Brown County Literacy Council, Tank Elementary School, and Bellin Memorial Hospital. She was also an active member and organist for the First Presbyterian Church in both Escanaba, MI and Green Bay, WI. She was known for her infectious laugh, caring heart, and vibrant spirit. She was deeply devoted to her family and friends.

Irma is survived by her four children Peter (Starr), Christopher (Lynn), Kathryn Dalebroux (Loren), and Jennifer Lyon; her grandchildren- Shayne (MaiLee), Kari (Tim), Lucas (Jessie), Alexandra (Jamison), Max, Rachel (Jack), Jennalee (Sam); and 10 great-grandchildren. She is further survived by her brother Eugene, brother-in-law Jim Tibbits, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters Shirley and Irene, brother-in-law Lewis Gade, her infant daughter Sarah, and former husband Reverend Dr. Philip J. Lyon.

A celebration of Irma’s life will be held on Saturday May 15th, 2021 with visitation beginning at 10 o’clock until 11 o’clock followed by a service at First Presbyterian Church on 200 South Ashland Avenue in Green Bay, WI. A procession will follow from the Church to Woodlawn Cemetery.

Special thanks to Bellin Memorial Hospital, Unity Hospice, and Irma’s long-time neighbor and friend Poncho. In lieu of flowers, Irma’s wish was that donations be made to the First Presbyterian Church Pantry or the Literacy Green Bay Organization.
