James M. Smith

James M. Smith, 101, of De Pere passed away on Monday, July 7, 2025 at Bellin Hospital in Green Bay.

James was born on January 29, 1924 in Mattoon, WI to James B. and Mildred (Butler) Smith. He was a graduate of Clintonville High School and furthered his education at UW-Oshkosh earning his bachelor's degree in education. James served his country in the Army Air Force during WWII, as a P51 Mustang Fighter Pilot.  On December 23, 1950, he married Alene Schmidt. James was an educator, working for the Green Bay School system as an elementary teacher at Beaumont Elementary School, NWTC, where he started a GED program for elderly adults, as well as teaching Aeronautics at UW- Green Bay. James was also an insurance agent for NGL for several years. He coached youth football for the city of Green Bay Recreation Program and after his retirement he enjoyed golfing, flying his airplanes, and doing aerobatics until the age of 72.

James is survived by his wife: Alene; son and daughter-in-law: Michael (Judi) Smith; sister-in-law: Joan Schmidt; niece: Cherry Mueller; and nephew: Steven Mueller.  He was preceded in death by his parents: James B. and Mildred Smith; sister: Grace (Darrell) Mueller; parents-in-law: John and Mary Schmidt; and brother-in-law: Howard Schmidt.

A funeral service to celebrate James’ life will be held on Thursday, July 17, 2025 at 2:00 pm at the Lyndahl Funeral Home, 1350 Lombardi Ave., with Rev. Earl Vorpagel officiating. Military Honors will follow. Relatives and friends may greet the family on Thursday, July 17, 2025 at the funeral home from 12:30 pm until the time of service at 2:00 pm.
