Janet Mellberg Obituary

Janet E. Mellberg, age 79, of De Pere went home to God on Saturday, November 4, 2023.

Janet was born June 18, 1944, in Manitowoc, WI daughter of the late Elmer and Golden (Wainwright) Vnuk. She attended Lincoln High School and graduated in 1962. She went on to pursue her Bachelor of Arts in Music Education and Piano and graduated from Holy Family College in 1966. Janet moved from Cincinnati to Green Bay in 1971.  She was a music teacher in the West De Pere School District for 37 years, during which time, she also pursued her Master of Musical Education from Silver Lake College.  Janet was very active in theater programs around the area, helping with many productions over the years including musical direction and backstage.  Her love of music was contagious as she influenced so many children over the years to enjoy taking her music, choral, and piano classes, but also and more importantly, to make music a beautiful part of their lives.  Her children and grandchildren also have been blessed with a true love of music in their lives.

Janet enjoyed playing “sheephead” with her family (even though we think she might have cheated once in a while!), having lunch with her longtime friends, spending time with her grandchildren, reminiscing and laughing together over family meals, visiting her brother and sister-in-law in sunny California, witnessing her grandchildrens’ many performances, and she loved holiday gatherings most of all.  She cherished being able to help prepare holiday feasts for those celebrations, as we all joined her in slowing time down, reveling, toasting, and connecting with each other.  One of our favorite memories of her was listening to her play the “Handclap” song over and over in her car.  Music was always present in her life, and because of her, it is always present in ours.

Survivors include her children, Peter G. Mellberg, Steven M. Mellberg (Erin), brother, Richard Vnuk (Jeanne), grandchildren, Hayden A. Mellberg, Jameson H. Beardsley, and Caitlin H. Mellberg, and numerous nieces and nephews.  Janet was preceded in death by her parents Elmer & Golden Vnuk, and her brothers, Ronald Vnuk (Joyce) and David (Mary Jo) Vnuk.

Funeral services will be held at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 14, 2023 at The Lyndahl Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Green Bay.  Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc at a later date.

The family will greet relatives and friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, November 14, 2023 from 3:30 p.m. until the time of services.
