Llewellyn Dickman

Llewellyn Herman Dickman – Dick to his friends and Lew to his church friends – passed away on Monday, August 20, 2018 at the age of 89, at home surrounded by his family.  

He was the only child of the late Herman and Elsie Dickman, born in Clintonville, WI on September 11, 1928.  He attended St. Martin’s Lutheran Grade School and graduated from Clintonville High School in 1947.  While in high school he played football and basketball, where his life-long passion for basketball began.  He played basketball for the Clintonville City Team into his 30s and was an avid supporter of UWGB Basketball, holding season tickets from the early 1970’s through the most recent season.

After graduating high school, he worked at Nelson Car Dealership until he found his vocation as a service member in the Army National Guard.  He served more than 30 years as a full-time member of the National Guard, ultimately retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer 4. He was a proud member of the 32nd (Red Arrow) Division and was activated during the Berlin Crisis and stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington. 

After retiring at the age of 55, he formed the Cemetery Club with six other recent retirees who were “too old to work, too young to die, so they met every Wednesday for b.s., ice cream and pie.”  The surviving members – with several new members throughout the years – continued to meet until recently.

He married the former Betty Jane Klemp on September 20, 1952, at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church in Clintonville, WI, and they shared more than 65 happy years together.  They lived in Clintonville for one year before he was transferred to Oshkosh, WI, where they lived for 15 years with a stop-over in Fort Lewis, WA.  In 1968 they moved to Green Bay, WI where they settled and established their permanent home. 

He is survived by his wife, Betty; son, Craig and wife, Karen Thomson-Dickman; granddaughter, Megan (fiancé Alex Renard); grandson, Brenden; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Mary & Bud Johnson, Mary Klemp, Ruth and Robert Hall, Judi and Cameron Gorges; and many nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elsie and Herman Dickman; in-laws, George and Sadie Klemp; brothers-in-law, George Klemp, Jr. and Byron Beversdorf; and sister-in-law, Carol Stewart. 

Visitation will be held at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 1731 St. Agnes Drive, Green Bay, WI at 9:00am on Thursday, August 23, 2018 with a funeral to follow at 11:00am.  Expressions of sympathy, memories, and photos may be shared with Lew’s family on his tribute page at www.lyndahl.com.
