Lloyd Gutzman Obituary

Lloyd Roy Gutzman, 94, Green Bay, passed away peacefully Friday, April 5, 2024, at his home surrounded by family. He was born on March 19, 1930, in Green Bay to the late Fred and Emma (Hundt) Gutzman. Emma sadly passed away during childbirth and with 9 siblings already at home, Lloyd was lovingly adopted by his uncle and aunt, Julius and Mary (Hundt) Gutzman. There he was raised alongside his sister, Viola with whom he had a special, close knit relationship.

On Dec. 11, 1948, he married Darlene Nelson in Denmark. They moved shortly thereafter to Green Bay where he worked briefly for the Green Bay Police Department before becoming a truant officer for the Green Bay Public Schools. Lloyd’s career evolved within the school district, becoming the Director of Transportation for 24 years before retiring in 1989. Lloyd and Darlene also owned and operated Bay True Value Hardware Store during this time.

As a loyal member of Calvary Lutheran Church for almost 70 years, Lloyd was a faithful man. He spent the majority of his retirement attending bible studies, playing cards with friends and volunteering for the Salvation Army. But above all, family was Lloyd’s most treasured gift. He cherished family outings on Sunday nights for chicken, time together at their cottage in Townsend and winters away in Texas. He received much joy from being helpful whether it was parking cars during Packer tailgates, playing “delivery man” for his son’s business in town or giving advice to anyone who would listen. Lloyd most enjoyed supporting his grandchildren at their sporting and musical events, celebrating their birthdays and never missing a special event in their lives. Fifteen years ago his heart grew when his first great grandchild was born and he acquired the name of “GG”, only to have 11 more great grandchildren wrapped around his finger. As a husband, father, brother and friend, Lloyd’s life was filled with so much love and joy. We feel so immensely grateful to have had him in our lives for as long as we did, he was our family’s biggest cheerleader.

Survivors include his three children and their spouses: Dr. Dennis and Linda Gutzman, Susan and Michael Adelbush, and Todd and Sue Ellen Gutzman; nine grandchildren: David (Kylie) Gutzman, Lisa (Charles) Houssiere, Lori (Garrett) Karam and Kristine (Alex Devine) Gutzman, Sarah (Steven) Gicius and Amy Adelbush, and Andrew, Tyler and Zachary Gutzman; 12 great grandchildren: Avery and Hunter Gutzman, Cash, Beau and Elle Houssiere, Bennett, Parker, Ellie and Brooke Karam and Madelyn, Regan and Emerson Gicius; two sister-in-laws: Lee Nelsen and Arnell Jorgensen; many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

In addition to his parents, Lloyd was preceded in death in 2007 by his wife of 58 years, Darlene; one son, Ricky; 4 brothers, 6 sisters, all their spouses and many special sisters & brothers in-law.

Friends may call after 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 13, 2024, at Calvary Lutheran Church, 1301 S. Ridge Rd., where funeral services will take place at 12:00 p.m. with Pastor Ben Williams officiating. Entombment will take place at Shrine of the Good Shepherd Mausoleum.
