Mary Jean Slavek

Mary Jean Slavek, devoted wife, mother and grandma, passed away at the age of 70 on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 at her home in Green Bay, WI, with her family by her side. She was born to the late Leo Torborg and Joanne (Fortin) on January 15, 1952 in Duluth, MN. She spoke often and fondly of her wonderful childhood in Golden Valley, MN. After graduating high school at St. Margaret’s Academy in 1970, she went on to study music as a pianist at St. Norbert College in De Pere, WI. She graduated in 1974 with a degree in Music Education.

On July 10, 1976, she married Charles Slavek at Old St. Joseph Church in De Pere, WI. Together they raised two sons and one daughter. Music was Mary’s calling and life’s work, and through it, she touched many lives. She taught piano in her home for 30 years and was an active church musician who loved leading children’s choirs. She especially loved musical theater and played for countless performances in her community spanning nearly 50 years. Mary was a Cub Scout mom, a Girl Scout troop leader, and homeschooled her children. She enjoyed family camp trips, cheering on the Packers, and hosting many family gatherings with her husband. Her grandbabies brought her much joy in her later years. Christmas was her favorite time of year and she always found ways to make it special for everyone.

Mary is survived by her husband Charles; three children: Jacob Slavek, Green Bay; Emily (Curtis) Sculliuffo, Green Bay; Evan (Frances) Slavek, Wausau; three grandchildren: Julian and Adam Sculliuffo and Mabel Slavek; sister Dorothy Hyde, Springfield, MO; brothers Mark Torborg, Waconia, MN, and Tom (Kristine) Torborg, Fridley, MN; and special friend Marybeth Marchese. Mary was preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law Bruce Hyde.

A funeral Mass will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 29, 2022 at Old St. Joseph Church on the St. Norbert College Campus, 123 Grant St, De Pere, WI, with Father James Baraniak, O. Praem, officiating. Visitation will occur at the church beginning at 11:00 a.m. The family would like to thank our many relatives and friends for their generous and comforting love and support during this difficult time.
