Nancy Kurschner Obituary

Nancy Ann Kurschner, age 88, went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at her residence in Green Bay.

Nancy was born November 4, 1936, in Curtiss, Wisconsin, daughter of the late Julius E. and Bessie M. (Hayden) Gehrke. She was a graduate of Cornell High School with the Class of 1955. On June 11, 1955, she was united in marriage to Maurice Kurschner in Cornell, Wisconsin. He preceded her in death on November 21, 2017, after 62 years of marriage.

Nancy enthusiastically supported her husband Maury in their first year together on the Kurschner family farm, then in Maury’s years at college, all the while raising their four children which were born in their first five years of marriage. After Maury’s graduation from college, he became a bi-vocational pastor while also pursuing a career as an electroplater finisher. Nancy graciously adapted to this busy schedule while having two more babies.

Nancy and Maury were an integral part of every church they joined. Nancy served as a Sunday School teacher, as a partner with Maury in the deacon ministry, and as hospitality coordinator among many other ministries in which she participated. She served the Lord with her whole heart at every opportunity.

During Nancy’s high school years, she earned the Homemaker of the Year award. From that auspicious start, she continually improved her skills in the kitchen, providing wonderful home-cooked meals for her family. Each family member received their own special birthday dinner and birthday cake, lovingly prepared by Nancy. Thanksgiving meals were a spectacular smorgasbord from sunup to sundown. The house was always full at Thanksgiving, with not only the family but anyone at church who did not have family in the area.

Nancy worked as Volunteer Coordinator at Heritage Hill State Park, and she also served as a volunteer interpreter. She sewed period clothing for Maury to be able to join her in volunteering at Christmas. She ran the kitchen at Tank Cottage using the wood stove to make delicious meals. Visitors were delighted when she would scold Maury who would sneak in to steal a cookie.

Nancy also enjoyed reading and gardening, and spending time with family. She delighted in her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her six children: Deborah (Darrell) Denson, Douglas (Lois) Kurschner, Danelle (Caleb) McCoy, Marshall (Lorrie) Kurschner, Kimberlee (William) Czaja, Kara (Craig) Spofford; 22 Grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren; her step-sisters: Eva Froehner and Dorothy Boyea; sister-in-law: Diane Gehrke; sister-in-law: Marlene (Larry) Fornell; and brother-in-law: Allan (Judy) Kurschner.

Nancy was preceded in death by her husband: Maurice Kurschner; parents: Julius & Bessie Gehrke; stepmother: Mildred Gehrke: brothers: David, Fred, Julius (Ruth), and Bill (Gloria) Gehrke; sister-in-law: Betty Gehrke; brother-in-law: Byron (Gloria) Kurschner; and sisters-in-law: Marge Kurschner and Mary Sterzbach.

The family would like to thank the Bellin Cancer Team for their wonderful care for Mom in the past three years, and Unity Hospice for their excellent service to the family and to Mom this past month.  We would also like to thank the congregation of Highland Crest Baptist Church for their love and support of Mom and our family.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 16, 2024, at Highland Crest Baptist Church, 1830 S. Military Avenue, Green Bay. Officiating at the service will be Pastor Chad Hertler of Highland Crest and Pastor Cory Dahl of First Baptist Sturgeon Bay, with interment at Riverside Cemetery in Withee, Wisconsin, at a later date

The family will greet relatives and friends at the church on Saturday, November 16, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the services at 11:00 a.m.
