Oliver Throne Obituary

Oliver Throne, age 94, of Green Bay, WI passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, July 26, 2021.  He was a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather.

He was born December 8, 1926 to Otto Throne and Harriet Stange during a thunderstorm in which lightning hit his hospital. His 3 older sisters helped care for him. He grew up in Green Bay and was a member of Boy Scout Troop 5 as a boy.  He was a prominent pianist and would have loved to pursue the profession if not for WWII. Oliver graduated from West High School in 1944.

Oliver enlisted and served as a sonar man in the Navy through WWII and the Korean War. His WWII ship, the USS Cole (DD-155), escorted convoys in the North Atlantic, the Western Mediterranean, and patrolled the eastern coast of the US. His Korean ship was USS McDermut (DD-677) where it served to support war efforts.  He returned home and worked at US Steel in Indiana before returning to Green Bay to work at Paper Converting until retirement.

Oliver married the love of his life Valora “Betty” Nichols on August 28, 1948 and shared 51 years of marriage before she passed away on April 29, 1999.  They raised 4 boys and lived in the Green Bay area. They enjoyed skiing, traveling, and entertaining their friends and family. Oliver also enjoyed scuba diving and cooking.

Oliver was a season ticket holder of the Chicago Symphony and enjoyed attending the opera and ballet. He was an avid reader and had read all 68 novels of Anthony Trollope, Marcel Proust and Charles Dickens. Once retired, Oliver traveled extensively visiting many national parks, China, London, Paris, and Venice. He passed his love of music, food and the arts onto his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

While not a religious man, he was very charitable to others. He rang bells to raise donations for the Salvation Army. He was active and open in his support of the Civil Rights movement. He also supported his grandchildren and great-grandchildren in fundraising events for schools and their scout programs.

He had a great sense of humor and made people smile.

He was preceded in death by his sisters: Glenore, Gladys, and Evelyn; his spouse, his son: David and his granddaughter: Leia.

He is survived and loved by his 3 children: Steven (Mary) Throne of Madison, WI, Christopher (Jennifer) Throne of Saint Paul, MN, and Jason (Mary) Throne of Hudson, WI; 6 grandchildren: Mindy (Paul) Foster, Jesse (Kristen) Throne, Jason (Darby) Throne, Cassidy (Andrew) Servais, Caitlin Throne, Adam Throne; and 9 great-grandchildren: Greyson, Annalyse, Kingston, Evan, Gavin, Vincent, Vivienne, Landyn, and Julian.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests that donations be made in Oliver’s name to one of the following charities:  All Hands and Hearts www.allhandsandhearts.org, World Resources Institute www.wri.org, or Scholarship America www.scholarshipamerica.org.
