Rev. Dennis Schatt Obituary

Reverend Dennis L. Schatt, loving husband and father of three children, passed away on Thursday, September 8, 2022, at the age of 78 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Dennis was born in 1943 in Fremont, Ohio. He graduated with the class of 1961 from Fremont Ross High School. In 1965 he received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Capital University, Columbus, Ohio. Dennis felt called to the ministry at a young age and received his Master of Divinity from the Evangelical Lutheran Theological Seminary, Columbus, Ohio in 1969.

In 1966, he married his wife Suzanne Jewell, affectionately known to him as ‘Skwert’, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Together they had three children and recently celebrated 56 years of marriage.

Dennis faithfully served the Lutheran community as pastor of St. John Lutheran Church in Ashwaubenon, WI, for 35 years. He loved his church family dearly and always felt it was a privilege and joy to be a pastor to the flock. During his tenure there he initiated the Food Pantry and the Early Footsteps Preschool and spearheaded a capital campaign which doubled the size of the church facilities. He also served for many years on the board of directors of Woodside Senior Communities, including several years as president. It was fitting and a blessing that he was able to return to Woodside for his final days, where he received excellent and compassionate care, in partnership with Unity Hospice.

Dennis was active in the Boy Scouts his entire life, earning his Eagle Scout award and eventually becoming the leader of his sons’ Cub Scout pack. Dennis was an avid reader; his bookshelf was always full and trips to the used bookstore with his sister was one of his favorite pastimes. His hands were rarely idle – he had a passion for woodworking and cross-stitching. Making a special gift each Christmas for his children and grandchildren became his joy. Feeding the birds and squirrels in the backyard gave him many hours of pleasure, as did sitting by a warm fire whenever there was the slightest chill in the air.

Dennis is survived by his wife: Suzanne Schatt; sons: Robert Schatt and Steve (Amy) Schatt; daughter: Kristin (Chris) Daniels; nine grandchildren: Benjamin, Emma, Sophia, Julia, Joshua, Isaac, Alex, Connor, and Clara; sister: Sherry (Schatt) Roach; nephews: Brian and Eric; and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents: Robert and Lois Schatt.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on October 8th at Ascension Lutheran Church, 2911 Libal St., Green Bay with Pastors Luther and Lori Swenson officiating. Visitation will begin at 12:00 pm at the church until the time of the service. Burial will follow at St. John’s Cemetery in Ashwaubenon.
