Richard English Obituary

Richard D. English, age 93, 0f Green Bay passed away Sunday, November 24, 2024 in Howard, WI.

Richard was born March 13, 1931 in Merrill, son of the late Harold and Martha (Hostmann) English.  He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 – 1953.  On August 29, 1954 he was united in marriage to the former Grace Piehler in Merrill, WI.

Richard was a man of impeccable character and integrity, and was a wonderful and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.  He prioritized God and family, and said repeatedly that God had blessed him and us with a special, loving family. Faith was at the center of his 70 year marriage to his wife Grace. He was a committed servant of God at Pilgrim Lutheran Church and a diligent student of the Bible.

Although not a serious student in high school, he decided he wanted to make something of his life.  He served our Country in the Army, was the first member of his family to go to college, and had a highly successful career in the Insurance field.

But he didn't stop there.  He wanted to make his community a better place and accordingly served on the Brown County Board, and served in leadership positions for the local chapter of the Barbershoppers and the NEW Zoo among others.  He diligently read all of the materials for every meeting so that he was prepared to intelligently discuss the issues and make the necessary decisions.

He was not just involved in the community-more importantly he was very involved with his family.  He cherished the time he spent with his mother and siblings.  He and Grace happily attended the activities of their children and grandchildren despite having to travel to do so.  They were always supportive and loving, and Joel and Dale have always said that they couldn't have asked for better parents.  These family moments, including the holidays, were cherished by all.  Although Richard is missed more than words can describe, there is joy in knowing that he is in Heaven with God.

Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Grace English; his sons: Dale (Julie) and Joel (Debbie); 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Nancy Gartman.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 7, 2024 at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 1731 St, Agnes Dr., Green Bay. The family will greet relatives and friends at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the services at 11:00 a.m.  Burial will take place at Fort Howard Cemetery at a later date.
