Robert M. Black, age 94, of Green Bay, passed away on Thursday, September 14, 2023. He was born on September 2, 1929.
Robert had a zest for life that he maintained until the very end. Curious, open-minded, gentle, and funny, Robert was a true people person, leaving everyone he met with a smile on their soul.
He proudly served our country in the Air Force from 1951 to 1955. During this period, he was stationed in various locations throughout Europe and Morocco. His exposure to new cultures prompted a lifelong love for travel and exploration.
On October 6, 1956, he married Rose Marie Black in Green Bay. An engineer and talented problem solver, he worked for the Wisconsin Telephone Co. and later the City of Green Bay and Village of Ashwaubenon. He was especially proud of his work on the design of Holmgren Way.
Robert was passionate about travel. He and Rose traveled extensively throughout Europe and Mexico. He continued to travel internationally later in life, including a recent trip to Ireland in June 2023.
A man of many interests, Robert was an active member of his community in Green Bay, as well as Arizona, where he and Rose spent winters for many years. He enjoyed volunteering with the local police departments and participating in ride-alongs. Robert also liked staying up to date on the latest technology advancements, staying active through fitness classes, attending church services at Unchurch and cheering on the Green Bay Packers. Most of all, he enjoyed connecting with people through conversation and spending time with his friends.
Robert will be reunited in peace with his wife Rose. He is survived by his daughter, Karen Gore; two grandchildren, Jenny Butman (Tommer) and Kelsey Gore; and one great-grandchild, Lucy Butman. He is also survived by his dear friend, Kris Perry.
A celebration of Robert’s life will be held on Thursday, September 21, 2023, at The Lyndahl Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 1350 Lombardi Ave., Green Bay, at 5:00 p.m., with Pastor Scott Eastman officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends from 4:00 p.m. until the time of service at 5:00 p.m. Please join us after the service for a Guinness in Robert’s honor.
