Stephen "Steve" Van Laanen, age 72, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 8, 2024, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Green Bay, surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with glioblastoma.
Born on November 15, 1952, to the late Richard and Muriel (Rockendorf) Van Laanen in Green Bay. At the age of 2 Steve was diagnosed with Polio and wore a long leg brace his whole life. His positive attitude and never quit mentality are a true testament to who he really was. Steve graduated from Ashwaubenon High School, where he and his high school sweetheart, Rosanne Marcey, were crowned Prom King and Queen. Steve and Rosanne married on June 8, 1973.
Steve spent 30 years working at Consolidated Freightways before starting and becoming the proud owner of Exclusive Use Express. He took great pride in his business and was well respected in his community.
Above all, Steve was a devoted husband, father, father-in-law, and grandfather. He was passionate about his family and loved spending time with them. Steve enjoyed many activities, including duck hunting, fishing, attending NASCAR races with his son and son-in-law, and relaxing on pontoon rides at his vacation home in Door County. His greatest joy was his grandchildren — cheering on his granddaughter Mayghan in tennis and his grandsons Isaac and Felix in baseball.
Steve is survived by his loving wife, Rosanne; daughter Amy (Cory) Bongle; son Brent (Krystal) Van Laanen; three grandchildren, Mayghan, Isaac, and Felix; his siblings: Jim (Penny DuBois) Van Laanen, Phil (Lynette) Van Laanen, Jeanne (Rick) Norgren, Paul (Denise) Van Laanen, and Rick (Julie) Van Laanen. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law: Mary (Dave) Pensis, Bobbie (Mike) Christiansen, Amy (Chris) Cuene, and Cherie Van Laanen; brother-in-law John Kurth; and many nieces and nephews.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Muriel Van Laanen; his in-laws, Robert and Shirley Marcey; and his sister-in-law Patricia Kurth.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Nativity of Our Lord Parish, 2270 S Oneida St., Green Bay, with Father Matt Simonar officiating. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. and continue until 10:45 a.m. Entombment will take place at a later date at Fort Howard Mausoleum.
